To work alone or with peers: Examining smallholder coffee farmers’ perceptions influencing collective actions

This study examines how smallholder coffee farmers’ perceptions may influence their engagement in peer mobilization and collective action. Forty farmers were interviewed the Central Highlands region of Peru using a closed-ended instrument. The sample was achieved purposive snowball sampling methods. Quantitative data on attitudes aspirations regarding working with peers, autonomy, external support as well knowledge, skills, behaviors pertinent to actions collected analyzed descriptive correlational procedures. Key findings indicate perceive need for support, feel there are benefits actions, aspire work peers. Based findings, it is recommended that practitioners farmer group leaders focus training efforts building smallholders’ knowledge skills mobilization, encourage association/collective action source target knowledgeable, skilled confident lead actions. has implications bolster farmer-to-farmer extension technical assistance systems inform identification leader farmers.
